University of Iowa police have identified the individual thought to be responsible for placing a camera in a restroom in the University Capitol Centre's Information Technology Services space last month.

The University of Iowa fired one student health clinic worker and disciplined another for breaching the privacy of an athlete and his girlfriend by immediately discussing the results of their pregnancy test.

UI spokesman Tom Moore said Thursday that an individual had been identified, but a name was not being released at this time.

"At this point in time we can only state that it was a person involved," Moore said.

According to an email sent Thursday from UI ITS Chief Information Officer Steve Fleagle to ITS staff, officers with UI Department of Public Safety identified an ITS staff member as the individual thought to have placed a small recording device in the UCC east restroom, which was discovered June 4.

"The individual has been removed from the workplace and is not allowed to be on UI property, have contact with staff, or participate in UI events," according to the email.

UI Police Director Chuck Green said, as of Thursday, the investigation remained open and no formal charges have been filed.

On June 4, a small video camera was found on the floor of the eastside restroom, room 2833, within UI's second floor ITS space in the Old Capitol Town Center. The camera, which had video recordings present in the device's internal memory storage, was seized by police.

Officials say a handful of individuals, some of them ITS staff members, were identified on the device's stored video.

The camera was found in a bathroom located in the ITS department space, but the restroom is near the second-floor entrance to the attached parking ramp and saw traffic from UI staff and passersby. The door to the parking ramp was permanently locked after the camera was found.
