Autopsy: Iowa City homicide victim was shot to death

Preliminary autopsy results show that the victim of a weekend homicide died of a gunshot wound, Iowa City police said Wednesday.

The body of Jonathan Wieseler, a 34-year-old Iowa City bail bondsman was found Sunday morning in Lederman Bail Bonds at 518 S. Capitol St. A preliminary autopsy conducted by the Johnson County Medical Examiner's Office revealed that he had been shot and the manner of his death was a homicide, police said in a news release Wednesday.

Police were called to Lederman at 11:11 a.m. Sunday where they discovered Wieseler's body "with multiple sources of trauma."

Police said Wednesday they believe the homicide is an isolated event. The department is investigating all leads, the release said.

Police are looking for the public's assistance in developing further information about what happened, the release said, and are looking to find out more about people who were in the general vicinity of Lederman, especially between 10 p.m. Saturday and 3 a.m. Sunday. The building sits directly across from the Johnson County Jail and Sheriff's Office.

    Wieseler grew up in Sioux City, graduating Sioux City North High School in 2001 and moved to Iowa City, where he received undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Iowa before taking a job at Lederman as a bail bondsman, according to his obituary. Wieseler was a big sports fan, especially of the Hawkeyes, loved to read and was extremely kind-hearted, those who knew him said.

    He also volunteered with the Alzheimer's Association and was a member of the Iowa City Learning Foundation, the obituary said.

    He was engaged to be married in June and planned to leave this weekend for his bachelor party in Las Vegas.

    Wieseler's funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 29 at St. Mary Catholic Church at 228 E. Jefferson St. in Iowa City, the obituary said. A visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City.

    The Iowa City Area CrimeStoppers will offer a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of a suspect. Anyone with information is encouraged to call 319-358-8477. Callers do not have to reveal their identity to collect a reward.

    The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations and Federal Bureau of Investigations are assisting Iowa City police with the case.
