Man accused of forging checks stolen from church

An Iowa City man faces charges after allegedly forging checks that had been stolen from a local church.

Police say Jerrell Clemons, 24, of 1053 Crosspark Ave. Apt. A, twice cashed fraudulent checks at Veridian Credit Union in the First Avenue Hy-Vee. Clemons allegedly forged signatures to write checks to himself in September for $645 and $350.

Police say the checks were stolen from an office at the Church of the Nazarene, 1035 Wade St.

Clemons was charged with forgery, a Class D felony, and third-degree theft, an aggravated misdemeanor.

A phone number associated with Clemons was not in service and he could not be reached for comment.
