Education company Pearson plans to cut 57 jobs at its Iowa City office within the next month.

Courtney Greene, communications director for Iowa Workforce Development, wrote in a Thursday email that British-based Pearson on Tuesday submitted a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice to Iowa Workforce Development. Greene wrote that the notice said 57 employees would be laid off in about 30 days at the Iowa City office at 2510 N. Dodge St., adding that there was no reason given.

The company has offices in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids.

Pearson in January announced plans to eliminate 10 percent of its global workforce this year. According to the company's website, it has 40,000 employees worldwide.

Laura Howe, a Pearson spokeswoman, at that time said in a statement that the company was not immediately releasing information about the number of jobs the company will cut at specific locations.

Howe did not immediately return a call seeking comment Thursday.
